‘There is a commonly held opinion that the Russian fleet was created relatively recently by Peter I, however in actual fact it is older than the British fleet. A hundred years before King Alfred (849 – 900 CE) built the first English warships, the Russians were already engaging in fierce naval battles, and it was the Russians who were the leading seagoing nation a thousand years ago’.
British historian Frederick Jane, late XIX cent.
